Should homosexuals be allowed to get married?
Gay Marriage - Yay or Nay?
Where do you stand on the gay marriage front? Do you believe that homosexual people should be allowed to get married just as easily and with all the same benefits as straight couples can? Why or why not?
I believe that anyone (as long as you are human -- if you're interested in marrying animals, then that's an issue) should be allowed to be wed. Marriage is a celebration and a union of two people who care deeply for one another and who wish to share their lives together, officially, and with all the benefits that marriage brings. To deny people that gift is to, in my opinion, be downright cruel.
Marriage, like a lot of other things in this country (of the United States) has become so enclosed in this religious light of Christianity. Christians argue that marriage is a sacred uniting of two people of different sexes and that it is not marriage any other way. Their argument, too, is that homosexuality is unnatural and "not what God wanted." My question to this always is, "If homosexuality is unnatural, and thus people 'choose' to become gay, then how come some animals are gay? Do they just all of a sudden choose to be that way??"
I don't understand why people can so readily deny couples marriage. It's horrible, in my opinion.

Re: Gay Marriage - Yay or Nay?
Yes, of course it should be allowed, and accepted.
Who are we to judge the sexual preferences of others? What gives us the right to stand in the way of the happiness of others? It is not our problem, they aren't harming us by doing it.
Now, if you're highly religious, that is another matter. But my views on religion and the Bible are a different story.

Re: Gay Marriage - Yay or Nay?
Right, exactly. That's what I think too. And yeah, like you said - they aren't harming us. It's silly. I think another argument too was that gay couples influence our youth and somehow may turn them into homosexuals.
I think these people are terribly misinformed. Terribly. Gay people, first of all, don't just wake up one day and say, "Hey, I think I'm going to choose to be gay from here on out." So a child can't observe a gay couple and think, "That's cool. I want to be gay too." It doesn't work like that lol! Secondly, if gay couples and marriage was something that was more out in the open, I think this would be so helpful so all those kids who are born gay and are confused about it and are scared to say anything. If we all just looked at homosexuals less judgmentally, then these poor kids may feel comfortable sharing what they're feeling with their parents instead of trying to deny it or hide it.
I'm with you on the religious bit.

Re: Gay Marriage - Yay or Nay?
I agree with the points made so far. Homosexual couples should most definitely have the same rights as heterosexual couples. However, I believe the problem lies within the actual definition of marriage as well as where it originates. Marriage is defined as a man and a woman who love each other, legally and/or religiously coming together to be husband and wife. Most of these ceremonies are religion based. I'm not sure if homosexuals are really pushing for marriage in the religous sense anyway though. I think they want to have the same financial/tax rights and something with the same core meaning of two loved ones being joined together. I truly hope that they can aquire at least that. Unfortunately, the majority of the world believes in some form of religion that has somewhat specific guidelines for marriage. Therefore without starting a war, I doubt that gay marriage will ever be widely accepted. It's terrible that we live in a world that is so close-minded.

Re: Gay Marriage - Yay or Nay?
I am a very religious person, and yet still agree gay marriage SHOULD be allowed.
That is one of biggest things I disagree with my church about. God loves everyone, no matter who they are. If they ask forgiveness, they are taken up into his kingdom, no matter what the crime.
So how can we say that God hates all those who like the same sex. It's really absurd in my opinion. Love is something that God cherishes, and personally I think it should be treated as such.
You can't say who you are going to fall in love with. That'd be like saying "God hates all those who get married but are different races." That's just ridiculous and absurd. Things happen, and people fall in love. If you don't like the idea of same sex marraiges DON'T GET MARRIED TO THE SAME SEX.
Simple as that really.
..Sorry I kind of got on a roll and couldn't stop.

That's awesome, Hope, for being such a religious person to think that way.
I'm happy that there are least people like you who share the same open-mindedness on gay marriage. Lol and yes! You said it exactly - If you don't like it, then simply don't do it yourself.

Re: Gay Marriage - Yay or Nay?
I'd have to say Hope's reply pretty much hit the nail on the head with what I think.(I'm a Christian also) You can't really choose who you fall in love with at all and why shouldn't they if they deeply and truly love each other like any loving couple does why shouldn't they be allowed to get marry. Love is love, simple as. I think as some others have stated is the whole hullaballoo that marriage is religion based and as everyone knows religion and homosexuality don't really mix too well and then people get their knickers in a knot over it. Gays getting married doesn't hurt anyone.
Unfortunately though I can't have discussions like this with my family, they go down the gays/lesbians are disgusting and a sin route. So I try not to bring things like this up...

Wow, that's so great that we have two Christians here who are okay with homosexuals.
That's really too bad though, Starry, that you can't discuss this topic with your family. I think that's hard for a lot of people. It's such a sensitive topic. But we can discuss it here! ^^

Re: Gay Marriage - Yay or Nay?
My mom is kind on the flip side of gay marriage. Like, she doesn't care if they get married or not...but she doesnt want to see them get married in a church. I'm not really sure why it matters, but to her i guess it does. I dont' see a problem with it either way.
So she's open to it, but in a way picky about it too.

Re: Gay Marriage - Yay or Nay?
*Is Dutch*
*Dances around*
Oh wait, I'm not gay, no use for me.
But pretty much one of those things people used to come halfway around the world for. Like our condone policy on softdrugs. Perfectly normal here, even though we're one of the most tolerant nations, that's not always a good thing. We're also at least a short way away from accepting gay marriage rather than tolerating it.
For people who can't see the difference. Hope accepts it, her mom tolerates it.
